Baudry-Confalones in Mexico City: Lunes: soft entry!

Hola!

We landed safely in Mexico City on Monday after a 5 hour flight and arrived at our hotel just north of the Condesa neighborhood at 2:30. Everyone of us except for Enzo seemed to suffer from some kind of high-altitude related symptoms. We mostly felt spaced out and had very light headaches, but it all sorted itself out after we rested in our room for a bit and drank plenty of water.

Mexico City sits in the Valley of Mexico at 7,350ft, and is completely surrounded by mountains and volcanoes. It has a subtropical highland climate due to its high elevation. As a result, the climate is quite nice and not too hot. It is currently the rainy season which means it rains every day, usually in the late afternoon or evening. This is actually a wonderful thing because it helps clean the air. I can’t imagine how much more difficult it must be to breathe when it’s hotter and drier.

After our quiet time we walked into La Condesa and wandered the tree-lined streets and lovely neighborhood parks, sampling delicious foods and soaking it all in. Our favorites were these vegan tacos we came upon at a corner taco stand called Por Siempre Vegana Taqueria. The long line up was a good sign and we dove in. We loved the seitan tacos al pastor and the mushroom and onions tacos, and loaded them up with nopales, pickled veggies and salsas.

The gastronomical highlight of the day was most definitely the AMAZING churros at Churreria El Moro, right across from Parque Mexico. We demolished two orders with chocolate sauce and spent a solid 10 minutes watching Señor Carlos work his craft from a window off the street. We’re going back tonight after dinner and probably every single day until we leave!

The kids watched part of a movie when we got back to the hotel and Luigi and I enjoyed a cocktail downstairs at Fifty Mll, widely considered to be the best bar in the city. My mezcal sour was smoky and delicious. There is a cocktail called Ant Man on the list. It’s got ants in it. GRACIAS, pero no gracias.
